To Call or Not To Call
|
If you live in an apartment then you know that some things in the apartment are your responsibility and then there are other other times when you have to call for maintenance. But if you are living on your own for the first time, you may not know when something can be fixed by you or when you need maintenance. We can help you separate the need for maintenance.
Let's start with the kitchen, for example if you have a clogged sink. Do you call maintenance? No, you could try using a liquid drain cleaner first or try using a bathroom plunger. Plunge the sink the same as you would a clogged toilet. If neither one of these methods work. Try using a wire hanger and try to snake the drain, maybe something got caught. If that still does not work it may be time to call maintenance.
In the bathroom, would you call a plumber for a clogged toilet? No, try the same methods for the sink in the kitchen, 9 times out of 10 the plunger works on the first or second try. If you have a bathtub or shower drain and you notice the water is not going down so fast. Do you call maintenance? Not yet, first use a heavy duty liquid drain cleaner and try using the same wire hanger trick. With a tub or shower drain chances are it is hair caught in there and you may be able to pry it free with the hanger in addition to the liquid cleaner. If that still doesn't work then you can call maintenance.
If you have any kind of back up in your sinks, shower or tub then that could be a pump problem or maybe something more. In a case like that call maintenance. If your pipes freeze call maintenance. For smaller problems like clogs these you can handle your self. You should be able to resolve these issues on your own.
